Clockwork Stag Beetle by GregoryTom Clockwork Stag Beetle by GregoryTom
I bought a chinsey plastic beetle from a dollar store, took it apart, cut it up, painted it and added clock parts. Feedback is welcome. I'm new to steampunk. Help me get better!

Very unique. You could probably make cool pieces like these and sell them if you wanted :) I think it has the steampunk feel down, the gears and other parts play into the anatomy lovely.

Thank you! I'm glad you think they are good enough to sell. How much do you think people would pay for them? I would have to charge a decent amount as they take time to create, and they require clock parts which are actually hard to find.

Looks cool. I've got a less intricate one of these in progress myself. Though mine is totally based off of :iconrhissanna: variant [link]

That confused the hell out of me for a moment. I was wondering how you knew what knickers I was wearing and their level of intricasy ;)

I had a look! So funny that other people saw the same beetle in a store and had the same idea. It's fun to modify, thanks for checking out my version!

It looks a little unbalanced. The combination of the "natural" parts with the clock parts is visually unbalanced. When doing steampunk creatures focus on making all parts as mechanical in appearance as possible. Look through other steampunk work here on dA to get a feel for this so it comes more easily to you.

You put a lot of time and work into this. Great job! I believe that you would be very good at converting plastic toys into something far more interesting. You'll definitely want to use metallic paints and try substituting small doll heads.

You could use dolls, animals, insects, or anything else you can think of, but I meant to substitute heads or parts from one species to another. For example, a childs head on a beatle could work. Think of Sid from Toy Story!

Yes, I love taking parts of something and using them in places where you would not expect to find them. Thrift stores can be like shopping malls for the Dr. Frankenstein in us!
